Can I try Filtrbox for free?

Yes, there is a free/trial version

Filtrbox is currently in private beta, and we are offering free accounts to beta users. Register for the beta here and you will receive an invitation email shortly. When we launch the service publicly, we will also offer a paid subscription version. No credit card is required during the private beta or for the free version.

Are there limits to the free version?

Free accounts are limited to 10 search terms and 15 days of article history.

If you are looking to monitor more topics and need additional keywords or would like longer article history, this will be available with the Filtrbox Pro service which is launching soon.

How does Filtrbox work?

Filtrbox is based on intelligent persistent search technology. This means the system searches, and re-searches its sources around the clock looking for new articles that contain the search terms you have entered. What we do once we find a potential new article is the "intelligent" bit.

What content sources does Filtrbox search?

Mainstream online news outlets and the enire blogosphere

Filtrbox searches thousands of online news sources— from the New York Times to the Pitkin County Tribune—along with the entire blogosphere for new content. . We constantly add new sources, and you can also add your own via RSS.

Why not use Google Alerts?

Filtrbox picks up where Google Alerts falls short, delivering features professionals need to track and manage lots of information. For example, Filtrbox maintains a history of articles discovered and sent to you so you never receive duplicates. Other key features of Filtrbox like contextual analysis, article and source feedback, and FiltrRank scoring mean that you don't just get the alerts, you get the content that is relevant without all the noise or a clogged inbox.

With Filtrbox you cast a wider net and get the benefit of monitoring more places than just Google for new articles, without doing any more work. We are constantly adding new sources, and allow you to add your own via RSS.

Is this a replacement for Google Reader/NetNewsWire/Pageflakes?

No. Filtrbox is a value-add layer between the millions of sources online and your browser or desktop. Portals and RSS readers are designed to bring into one view lots of content, but they are for reading, not monitoring. We integrate with readers via FiltrFeeds, the custom RSS feeds you can create.

If you are an avid portal or RSS user, and you like reading all of your content in one place, just create a custom RSS feed in Filtrbox and add it to your reader of choice. We suggest adding your FiltRSS feed to the top left of your reader. Read the critical, important new articles first!

How do you handle SPLOGs (spam blogs)?

Filtrbox analyzes every piece of content found for a search term and evaluates it. Similar to email spam filters we analyze and score the articles to look for spam. We also maintain both a global and personal SPLOG blacklist. We are constantly working to improve our filters and SPLOG detection, to your benefit.

What is a Filtr?

Filtrs are essentially search terms or phrases, similar in function to a search text box. Filtrs become much more than simple search terms as you add additional terms to refine the results or add context. Filtrs also learn over time and calculate your feedback on sources to help FiltrRank deliver incredibly accurate scoring, customized to you.

What is a FiltrGroup?

A FiltrGroup is a group of Filtrs. They allow logical organization of Filtrs and article results, and are used as the grouping mechanism for the daily emails and RSS feeds we provide. For example, a venture capitalist (VC) might create a FiltrGroup called "Portfoio Companies", and put the Filtrs for all of their current investments into it.

What is a FiltrFeed?

Filtrbox enables the generation of custom RSS feeds, and what makes this special is the granular control over what gets included in the feed. FiltrFeed is our name for these user specific, custom RSS feeds. With FiltrFeeds you can control a number of important elements of the feed such as Filtrs, date range, minimum score, and total articles to be included. This control becomes very valuable when you integrate a feed into a reader or turn it into a widget and display the articles on a website, dashboard, or blog.

What is FiltrRank?

FiltrRank is an intelligent 3 dimensional article scoring system. FiltrRank is used within the system to provide noise-control and ensure the most relevant, credible articles "bubble to the top". FiltrRank also becomes tuned to each user uniquely as they interact with the system, further refining and improving the scoring.
